John Schimek is Professor of Double Bass and Music Education for the Wanda L. Bass School of Music at Oklahoma City University, a position he has held since 1993.
A nationally recognized educator, Schimek has presented clinics in 39 states, China, Brazil, and Poland. A regular presenter at the American String Teachers Association (ASTA) conventions, he has also presented, performed, and conducted at several of the International Society of Bassists conventions. In 2007, he hosted the ISB Convention, at Oklahoma City University. As a performer, he has appeared with several professional orchestras and has recorded for television and movie productions. He is in demand for his work with children and performing at children’s centers and hospitals. Currently, he is the lead teaching artist for the Oklahoma El Sistema program. As an adjudicator, he is regularly invited to competitions throughout the U.S. and abroad.
His published material may be found in American String Teacher Journal, Teaching Music, Bass World, state music journals, and he is a contributing author for Teaching Music Through Orchestral Performance.
He is the recipient of several awards including the OK-ASTA Teacher of the Year, the Oklahoma City University Music and Performing Arts Outstanding Faculty Award, and has been recognized twice by the Oklahoma Legislature.
